Swan Dive Quilt - Foundation Paper Piecing Fun & a Giveaway!

I have a wonderful quilt to share with you as we near the end of October.

Hi everyone - it's Mona here and I'm excited to share with you a great pattern from The Fat Quarter Shop - the Swan Dive Quilt Kit Featuring Scarlet & Sage by Moda Fabrics.

Swan Dive Quilt Kit Featuring Scarlet & Sage by Moda Fabrics

(Make sure you check out the Fat Quarter Shop blog for all the details! Also, this post has affiliate links.)

I have to admit when I first saw the Swan Dive Quilt pattern, I was a little intimidated. I am not a fan of cutting fabric. I am not a fan of small pieces. However, this quilt uses foundation paper piecing, so I decided to go ahead and give it a try. Overall, I'm very pleased with the results!

The pattern offers 2 sizes - baby and lap. I opted to make the small/baby size quilt. I did add some sashing between the blocks which made the quilt a little larger than the baby size.

For the baby quilt, you'll need one of the Jolly Bar Cake Mix Recipe by Miss Rosie's Quilt Co., a Jolly Bar of patterned fabric (I used Harper's Garden by Sherri & Chelsi), a Jolly Bar of solid fabric, border fabric, and binding fabric.

I had never used any of the Cake Mix Recipes previously, but I loved using them. Basically, you sew along the dotted lines as per the instructions and then cut them out.

As I said earlier, I'm not a fan of little pieces - or of cutting fabric. You will need a total of 360 half-square triangles (HST's), 288 that finish at 1 1/2". Never, I repeat, never would I try to do this without using foundation paper piecing! (By the way, I used my Oliso iron when pressing all of the seams open. It did an AMAZING job. You can read my review of the iron and get a coupon to save 20% on my Oliso iron review post.)

By using the Cake Mix and following the quilt pattern, the quilt itself came together very nicely. It was a lot of work but definitely worth the effort.

  2. I like the sashing on your version of the Swan Dive quilt because it gives my eyes a chance to rest. I like Fat Quarter Shop's version, but it is too busy for my aging eyes, haha!

  17. I'm not a fan of small pieces and so many HSTs. I've never tried FPP but I've been watching YouTube videos lately and thinking maybe I'd give it a try.

  30. I probably will not make this right now. I am just finishing up piecing a quilt from a cake mix that was entirely HSTs.... so I need a little break :) But it is a beautiful quilt!

  31. That is a lot of HSTs, but I may try a smaller version.

  32. I think I would make this, as I can do paper-piecing. I like the colors of your quilt better than the FQS's.

  33. I love Swan Dive!! Paper piecing is so much fun and I love the accuracy!!

  34. I would definitely be up for trying the Swan Dive quilt!

  35. Yep, I might try to make the Swan Dive quilt because I think I could use up a lot of scraps that way.

  36. I absolutely love flying geese and would love to try the pattern.

  37. I would like to make the Swan Dive quilt. I really enjoy paper piecing and the accuracy it provides when working with small pieces. Thank you.

  38. I love the movement in this quilt, and the opportunity to use small cuts of fabric. It's just beautiful. Honestly, I'm not sure that I would make it. I only do small pieces when I can strip piece larger cuts, slice them up, and press the seams in one direction. But I agree that this quilt would be worth the small-piecing effort! Thanks so much for sharing this!

  39. I'm with you all those little pieces. I wonder if making the little onrd flying geese instead of separate hst would that help. The results are spectacular.

  40. Beautiful! You did a wonderful job! Yes, I’d love to make this quilt. Now what colors do I choose?

  42. The quilt is adorable and I would definitely make it! I really like it with the sashing.

  43. I'm a bit terrified of flying geese (not the birds themselves). I love the quilt with the sashing. It definitely looks doable with the paper piecing too. So, a maybe leaning strongly towards probably.

  44. How wide are your sashing pieces between your blocks?
